About Me

My name is Zane Foyle, I am a young aspiring film director. I have currently finished my debut 'Confessions', a silent, noir character study. I grew up in Sydney, NSW and I am 14 years old. I have dreamt of becoming a film director since I was 8 years old. Ever since then, I have been visioning and building, creating arthouse films to polarise audiences.

My Vision For "Confessions"

My vision for this film was to split audiences. I wanted to polarize for better effect. It can be argued that this film has no essential story, and is only just a set of shots of backgrounds and the subject walking around. This is by design. However, I still know that it does in fact have a meaning. All shots are experimental, but symbolise and foreshadow the true darkness behind the picture. In this film there are 8 segments, all relying on different feelings the main protagonist's experiences. By the end, it's not 100% clear, but I am sure that some pieces of the puzzle will come together. What I want is to help audiences make up their own minds, interpret the story in different ways. I have my own interpretation, but there are no wrong answers.

The black and white is used to create a completely different world to the protagonist. It is to show how intimidating everything can be. He feels watched. He feels paranoid. He's committed a crime that he cannot undo. In these 8 segments of the film you will notice that they feel like montages. This is again by design. The absence of dialogue is replaced with every day sounds, growing louder and scarier, taunting the protagonist. This is used as the soundtrack. This silent film in particular isn't a call back to how things used to be, it's part of it's own genre.

The idea of this genre is that it's qualities are used as characteristics for the characters and how they are implemented. Film isn't just about having a clear, specific story and thinking about what audience wants all the time. Do artists take requests? Or do they paint their heart into the canvas that stands in front of them. Art is about self-reflection. You learn more about yourself. When I make films, I learn more about who I am and my passion for film.
